By 2030, nearly 30% of China's electricity consumption is expected to come from scenic new energy sources

China's electricity consumption is expected to reach 10 trillion kilowatts by 2030, with nearly 30 percent coming from scenic new energy sources. By then, wind and pv are expected to generate 2.65 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, about 6.3 times last year's output.

Over the next decade, China's overall electricity consumption will continue to grow.

On Sept 21, at the "Energy Transformation" forum and the awarding ceremony of the International Standard Innovation Base, Liu Jizhen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former President of North China Electric Power University, said that based on the data from various institutions, the electricity consumption of the whole society is expected to reach 10 trillion kilowatt hours by 2030. This will be an increase of 56.25% from 2017.

According to the 2017 National Electricity Reliability Annual report released by the National Energy Administration and the China Electricity Council, the total electricity consumption in 2017 was 6.4 trillion kilowatt hours, up 6.6 percent year-on-year.

"There has been a significant increase in electricity consumption, not only because of the development of the whole society and economy, but also because of the implementation of electricity substitution." "The estimate of 10 trillion kilowatt-hours is conservative," Liu said.

According to Liu, half of China's electricity consumption in 2030 will come from thermal power, which is 5 trillion kilowatt-hours, 1.1 times that of last year. Hydropower will generate 14,500 kilowatt-hours, 1.2 times last year's figure and 14.5 per cent of total electricity consumption. "This shows that there is not much room for the growth of thermal power and hydropower." "Liu Said.

About 9 per cent of electricity consumption will come from nuclear power. Nuclear power generation is expected to reach 0.9 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2030, about 3.6 times last year's figure.

The fastest growing power generation is wind and light new energy. Wind and pv are expected to generate 26,500 units of electricity in 2030
