In 2018, the installed capacity of global microgrid projects totaled nearly 20 GIGAwatts
Navigant Research, a us-based clean energy technology Research firm, has released its latest microgrid study, saying that as of the fourth quarter of 2018, there were 2,258 confirmed microgrid projects globally, with a cumulative size of 19.575 GIGAwatts (including installed and planned).
Johnathon DE Villier, a Research analyst with Navigant Research, said: "The microgrid deployment tracker shows That North America is the leading microgrid market in total capacity, followed by Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa."
Moreover, solar pv and energy storage occupy a prominent place in modern microgrid systems, and rural electrification and energy access schemes in particular are driving growth in the remote sector, according to the report.
According to the report, remote microgrids account for nearly 40 percent of the world's microgrid capacity, totaling 7,604.4 megawatts. The next largest customer base by capacity is commercial/industrial (C/I) and utilities at 5,542.9 and 2,307.9 mw, respectively.
At the same time, the remote market also leads other markets in new production capacity, with 67 new micro-grid projects with a total installed capacity of 415.4 megawatts.
