As The State Grid Corporation of China speeds up the construction of a strong smart grid, as one of the core equipment of smart grid: smart transformer, the improvement of its technical level plays a huge role in promoting the construction of smart grid. The transformer on-line monitoring function and real-time feedback interaction function add intelligent development wings to the traditional transformer.
 
Transformer on-line monitoring is to monitor the operation state of the transformer by analyzing the dissolved gas in oil, partial discharge, core ground current, winding deformation and vibration according to various mechanical and electrical characteristics of the transformer. The development of modern sensing technology, microelectronics technology and computer technology has laid a solid foundation for the condition monitoring of high voltage equipment such as transformers. As an important equipment of substation, intelligent transformer differs from traditional transformer in that it has intelligent on-line monitoring function.
 
1. Advantages of transformer on-line monitoring
 
In the long run of the transformer in the power grid, it is inevitable that various defects will accumulate. These defects develop into failure process, which can be divided into two categories: gradual failure and sudden failure. The gradual failure is mainly manifested in the transformer in the normal operation process, due to insulation aging, moisture, etc., the insulation performance gradually decreases, and finally leads to the failure. Although the occurrence rate of such faults is high, it has certain regularity and can be detected and avoided by online monitoring. The timely and accurate prediction of transformer faults is not only the focus of power grid operation and maintenance personnel, but also the key to ensure the safe and stable operation of power grid.
